It turns out the iPad will read books out loud to you with audio dictation, a controversial feature that caused some trouble for Amazon’s Kindle last year. Also, Apple indicated that you’ll be able to use the iPad to read EPUB titles from sources outside of the iBooks store. The new features are described in the iBooks overview…

If you are a non-US resident, and are waiting on the iPad as a replacement for the internationally crippled Kindle, think again. The iBooks application, one of the standout parts of Steve Jobs’ presentation on Wednesday, is US-only. Take a look at the iPad “features” page and you’ll see, in tiny letters at the bottom of...

Apple Starts Stocking Shelves of International iBooks Stores
Yesterday, the international iBooks stores were almost empty. In Spain, there was a single, dusty volume on the shelf: “Les vies encloses” by Georges Rodenbach. It was in French. Today, the shelves are groaning under the weight of dull, beige-covered tomes from Project Gutenberg, all of which are available free. To see and download...

Kobo E-Reader First on iPad
The iPad might have iBooks, but if Apple’s built-in iPhone apps are anything to go by, then it will likely be gorgeous but limited (the Mail app, anyone?). We think that it’ll be the third party e-book readers that turn the Moses Tablet into the Kindle Killer people so obviously want it to be. Ironically, the Kindle application will...

If you’re one of the people around the world buying an iPad today, you might want to check out Apple’s iBooks e-reading app (you might also want to call in sick to work, as you won’t be getting much done today). Apple Video Shows iPad Flash Support, But Don’t Believe It
Some of Apple’s promotional material about the iPad implies the device’s Safari browser can load Adobe Flash content. However, demonstration units of the tablet, including the one presented by Steve Jobs, could not, and a consumer has already filed a complaint to the Federal Trade Commission alleging false advertising. 9to5Mac’s...

Stanza for iPad Adds Comic-Book Support
We’d all but given up on Stanza, our favorite iPhone e-reading app ever reaching the iPad. It seemed that Amazon had bought out Stanza only to kill it and reduce competition for its own Kindle for iPad. It turns out we were wrong. Today, Stanza was updated to version 3.0, and will now work on the iPad. Seasoned Stanza users will be comforted...

How Apple Designed the iPad Out in the Open If you take a look at Apple’s “magical and revolutionary” iPad, you might see a brand new device, an entirely new product category that sprung forth from Apple’s labs fully-formed. Apple iPad Raises the Stakes for E-Readers
Apple’s much-awaited iPad tablet is a good looking, multipurpose e-reader but it is no Kindle slayer, say publishing executives and electronic-book enthusiasts. Instead, the iPad is likely to raise the stakes and help traditional e-readers evolve into more sophisticated devices. “The iPad is for casual readers and people who favor...
