Concept Notebook Has Handle and Stand
Remember the old toilet-seat iBook from Apple? What’s that, you’d done your best to forget it? Yeah, us too. Sorry to dig up those bad old memories. The point, though, is that the candy-colored computer had a handle, and despite its aesthetic flaws, a notebook with a handle is, well, handy. Zhang Shouze’s Playing By Heart* concept...

OPD Product Design’s Koolhaus faucet concept helps monitor your water consumption
UK-based OPD Product Design’s Koolhaus concept is a faucet that lets you know how much water you’re using–not just from the Koolhaus itself, but throughout the entire bathroom, even dividing the bath tap and shower tap into separate categories. I’m not crazy about the form factor–seems like a part from an extreme...

Pixel Casting Machine
Pixel Casting Machine
Another great material experiment for today: The Pixel Casting Machine can be reconfigured by hand to create an infinite variety of pixelated ceramic vessels. The mold works like a regular slip-cast mold; the blocks are made of plaster to absorb water from the ceramic. After some time, the remaining liquid is poured out, leaving a hollow vessel....

Gizmodo Gallery ‘09: Automatic Pancake Machine Demo
These pancakes were seriously perfect every time! Typically you add a measured jug of water or milk to the pre-mixed powder bags, but the crew at Gizmodo had the machine on loan for a week and assure us that coffee pancakes taste great, as do beer pancakes which also get an incredibly fluffy texture. You can add almost any extra ingredient (within...

Intentionally inefficient cigarette packaging concept
As designers, we spend much of our time making things better, but what if to improve someone’s life, we had to make something worse? Recent RISD grad (alma mater shout out), Erik Askin recently published “Designed to Annoy: A theoretical look at designing inefficient packaging”, a thoughtful twist on the ubiquitous cigarette...

Mobile Airload: A Cellphone that Purifies Air
Ju Young Kim has designed a cellphone that apparently purifies air. In fact this could be the world’s first air purifying cellphone that also protects the users from air pollution and viruses. The Mobile Airload also emits a very pleasing aroma that makes the user’s environment smell good regardless of the person using a perfume or not....

RIP Ikea Fira
[photo credit: Craftster user Romey14 ] Sadly, as of this month Ikea has discontinued the Fira, a handy little set of wooden box drawers that everyone loved customizing.
