"Ultimate Factories" excerpt: Inside Ikea

November 20th, 2009 admin

We’d love to see the introduction of a television program about industrial design that isn’t an annoying reality show, but until that day comes, we’ll happily settle for National Geographic’s awesome “Ultimate Factories.” Check out this excerpt from their inside look at an Ikea factory , where we can see what makes the LACK table so rigid: board-on-frame

Video: Inside an Ikea Factory
Ever wondered what lurks inside one of Ikea’s Lack tables, the cheap, light and ubiquitous side tables that litter our homes? The answer: almost nothing, which is kind of what I expected. This video from the National Geographic gives us a peek inside the Ikea factory where these tables are made, in Zbaszynek, Poland. The Lack is little more...
Best Ikea Hack Ever: Starting a Fire
Best Ikea Hack Ever: Starting a Fire
Helmut Smit is our new favorite artist/designer, even if FLAMMA was the only project he’d ever done (it isn’t, by the way, and they are all stellar). This brilliant Ikea Hack “harks back to one of humanity’s basic needs: making fire.” As Ikea does not sell matches or lighters, Smits has taken cues from the wartime...
Sandbox’s amazing Ikea Product Test
Sandbox produces a series of videos where they tie things to an unseen moving vehicle, drive it off and see what happens. Above is their amazing Ikea Product Test, conducted in just this manner. If you like that, check out their attempts to swipe a tablecloth out from under breakfast… Thanks, Thom! (more…)  Read More →
Ikea by way of Woody Allen
In this tongue-in-cheek video, the “acting” is about as good as it is in the early silent films the soundtrack evokes; but while no one here is winning any Academy Awards, the concept is amusing. NYU ITP student Adam Lassy has rigged up a bunch of Ikea standards with robotic motors and neurotic personalities: Ikea Robotics – Animals...
New IKEA 2011
New IKEA 2011
The 2011 IKEA catalog is out now, and there are a few pieces that I like in particular. IKEA does such a great job of getting their catalog out early, and getting all of their products available online before they release it. Above, the VIKA VEINE top (white or black-brown) and VIKA MOLIDEN legs combo is pretty sweet. I love that you can fold...

Ikea Hack: Bed Computer Desk From Dish-Rack
Ikea Hack: Bed Computer Desk From Dish-Rack
This week I have been laid low with a wet, spluttering cold and a rather amusing bike polo injury. This means that many of the day’s posts are coming direct from my huge, comfortable bed. It also means that I am very interested in this laptop bed desk from Ikea hacker Andrew. Andrew, the poor poppet, was suffering greatly from using his...
RIP Ikea Fira
RIP Ikea Fira
[photo credit: Craftster user Romey14 ] Sadly, as of this month Ikea has discontinued the Fira, a handy little set of wooden box drawers that everyone loved customizing. I’ve got four of them myself, and while they were a pain to assemble–you’ll got to nail each individual box together with nails that appear to have been made...
Thinking inside the box (when the inside used to be the outside)
Thinking inside the box (when the inside used to be the outside)
Here’s my consumerist Circle of Life: I sell stuff on eBay, then use that money to order new products from Amazon. And the cardboard boxes my Amazon purchases arrive in, after undergoing a slight operation, often go back out the door laden with eBayed stuff–just cut the packing tape off of the bottom flaps, pull the glued tab free...

Sobrino House in Argentina by A4estudio
A4estudio present us with this masterpiece of concrete, glass and aluminum located in Mendoza, Argentina. The low profile home shows a combination of materials that ties to the landscape. Boulders and stone walls seems to emerge and meet the cantilevered concrete structure and the middle outdoor space, acting more like an industrial atrium and...
