At this rate, it seems inevitable that the number of phones running Google’s open source operating system will eventually outnumber the number of iPhones, which run Apple’s proprietary (and closed) operating system. It’s a situation that has many observers thinking back to the 1980s, when IBM introduced its PC and eclipsed Apple in market share by betting on open platforms. In the end, Apple was left with a respectable business, but a single-digit morsel of the PC market share. (The Mac has since crept up to 9.4 percent, according to IDC.) How could Google draft more customers into the Android army and diminish the iPhone’s …

A year after its release, Google’s open source Android operating system has become a sensation. After a slow start, it is now available on at least 12 phones, with more devices waiting in the wings. Good news for Android fans, right? Not really, say some developers. A slew of problems have made managing Android apps a “nightmare,”...
If you’ve thought about picking up an Android-powered phone but found yourself turned off by the hardware choices (ahem, G1), you may soon wish to reconsider. “Android adoption is about to explode,” said Eric Schmidt, Google’s CEO, in an earnings conference call Thursday. “You have all the necessary conditions.”...
Two weeks ago when Buddy Roark bought a brand-new HTC Eris smartphone from Verizon, his first Android device, it was a big step up from his feature phone. But it wasn’t until a few days later that he realized part of his new phone wasn’t so new after all. The Eris was running a version of Android that came out almost a year ago, which...
AT&T has its heart set on Motorola’s latest Android phone, the Backflip. Starting March 7, the Backflip will retail for $100 with a two-year contract and a $100 mail-in rebate. The Backflip will be the first smartphone running the Google-designed open source Android operating system to be available on AT&T’s network. At the...
Dell has, at long last, confirmed its intentions to get into the smartphone market. The company’s first handset will be the Mini 3, about which Dell is saying nothing other than that it will run on the Google-backed Android operating system. If we know Dell, it likely won’t matter, as there is sure to be a deluge of handsets, all with...
With plenty of heat on AT&T this past year, hopes have been running high for Apple to share its iPhone with Verizon. However, an analyst does not foresee a Verizon iPhone arriving anytime soon. That’s because Verizon recently announced a partnership with Google to offer two new Google Android-powered handsets this year. That would suggest...
Apple on Thursday afternoon released a minor update for its iPhone OS, fixing a major bug many affected users referred to as “coma mode,” whereas the handset would not awaken from sleep. In Apple’s support forums, many iPhone customers complained that the iPhone OS 3.1 update rendered their phones unresponsive in sleep mode arbitrarily....
It’s surprising that Yelp, the go-to site for finding restaurants, bars and other venues, has no presence in the Android Market. But that’s okay. Foursquare does the job with a social incentive to boot. Foursquare is a location-based social mobile network that allows users to check-in at different places, post tips and to-do items...
UC Davis (my alma mater) is getting into iPhone apps, too. The university is offering its first iPhone app development class, similar to the course taught by Stanford. Granted, the Davis course is taught by professor Ken Joy, and Stanford’s is led by Apple employees . Still, it’s great to see more computer science programs teaching...
It’s just the beginning of the year and already HTC is on a roll. The company has announced three new smartphones — two of those will run Google’s Android operating system — and a redesigned user interface that aggregates social networking feeds. The three new HTC phones are HTC Legend, a Nexus One clone called HTC Desire...

8 people Bought the $1,000 'I Am Rich' iPhone app
[Apple]
In its first 24 hours available, EIGHT people -- six Americans and two from Europe -- bought "I Am Rich," a seemingly useless iPhone app that has since been removed from the App Store, for a penny under one grand. I am dead serious.
