The company is expected to announce its own e-book reader in time for holiday season sales next month, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal . Barnes & Noble hasn’t yet commented about the device. But an announcement from the company would confirm months of speculation about it. Barnes and Noble has updated its iPad e-reader app, and it has fixed many of the oddities that made me describe it as “adequate” back in May. The biggest changes are in the reading interface. You can now dim the display from within the app, just like you can in iBooks and Instapaper. Brightness is one of my biggest niggles with the...
By Nook or by crook, you will get that book! That is, almost, what Barnes & Noble is saying to those worried about not receiving their Nook e-readers in time for Christmas. Desperate to get the Nook in time to make some fast Christmas cash, B&N decided an early launch with not enough units would be a good idea. Now, as customers start...
Like Harvey “Two-Face” Dent, a new dual-screen device has two faces to match its double identity: It promises to be an electronic book reader and a netbook at the same time. The Wi-Fi enabled device, called eDGe, will fold like a book and can be used as an e-reader. It will also serve as a digital notepad you can use to write notes...
LAS VEGAS — The Amazon Kindle’s E Ink screen is easy on the eyes for reading, but the software’s really laggy. The iPhone’s touchscreen is slick and fast, but you’ll wear your eyes out reading off it for several hours. What if you combined the benefits of both these products into one? That’s the idea behind...
Jeff Bezos has survived the iPad. Predictions that Apple’s bright tablet computer would be a Kindle-killer haven’t quite come to pass: Amazon CEO Bezos says that the growth rate in sales of his e-reading device has tripled since June, when he dropped the Kindle price to $189. (Clearly increased competition from other e-readers, like...
A digital book reader could bring information to students in developing countries using a technology that is long past its prime: 8-bit computing. The Humane Reader , a device designed by computer consultant Braddock Gaskill, takes two 8-bit microcontrollers and packages them in a “classic style console” that connects to a TV. The...
For those who feel there’s not enough choice in e-readers or smartphones, here are some new options. Acer is showing a new e-reader and smartphone that more than anything else add clutter to the category. Plastic Logic, which was set to ship its large screen Que e-reader in April, is now delaying it to “sometime this summer.” The company sent notifications to pre-order customers late Thursday afternoon announcing the delay and saying it needed the time to “fine-tune features and enhance the overall product.” Plastic Logic...
Apple iPad’s most striking feature, its gorgeous 9.7-inch touchscreen display, uses liquid crystal display technology — but with a few unusual twists — to present a vivid image and a wide viewing angle. “The iPad’s display uses the same capacitive touchscreen technology as the iPhone and iPod Touch,” says Vinita...
E-readers are far from dead but many are certainly gasping for breath. A shake-out in the e-reader market has put some smaller companies out of business, leaving the playing field clear for giants like Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Sony. The list of e-reader makers running into trouble has grown in the past few weeks: Audiovox has canceled plans...

NASA is about out of options for keeping U.S. astronauts in space after 2011.
